Ask the NYTR

Jody Christopherson, NYTR blog editor

Recently we've been getting some very good questions about NYTR's policies. In an effort to be as transparent as possible here are the answers!

Q: What type of shows does NYTR review?

JODY: Underrepresented innovative works that include; new plays Off-Off Broadway, experimental new adaptations of classic works and/or translations, plays by our staff and alumni(NYTR bloggers, NYTR published writers) that are produced in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

Q: What doesn't NYTR review?

JODY: Stand up comedy, dance (though we do cover plays with dance in them), concerts, readings, workshop productions, short plays, one acts, theater for young audiences (children), Broadway and most Off Broadway.

Q: How do plays get chosen to be reviewed?

JODY: Press requests are sent to the NYTR editor (Jody Christopherson) at nytrpressrequests@gmail.com or invite@theaterbloggers.com. (The second is the ITBA contact address. NYTR is a member and so are a lot of other great blogs.) They are then forwarded to our group of writers. The writers look through the request and select shows that interest them.

Q: What can I do to get the writers attention?

JODY: Include concise and clear subject lines for your review requests that state the producing company, theater venue, title of show and dates the show runs. In the body of the email send a press release including a play synopsis, info on the cast, crew, production team and photos or videos if you have them.

Q: How far in advance should I invite NYTR to my show?

JODY: 20-30 days in advance. Our posting schedule can fill up quickly and we want to see/ represent as much as possible!

Q: What is the turn around time for a review to posted?

JODY: We try to post all reviews 48 hours after seeing a performance. Occasionally it takes up to a week depending on research, gathering photos and editing.

Q: Do you edit negative reviews for content?

JODY: No. But sometimes I wish that I could. I do ask writers to be constructive. It's very difficult to read a critical review of an artists' work that I know and love, and this happens from time to time. BUT I also do not believe in biasing our writers, or allowing personal conflicts to color the criticism of work. Good critics can help to shape and strengthen plays. At their core, our reviews are feedback from theater professionals on what they are seeing. Some are experts, some are not, but all are audience members. This is what sets us apart from traditional review sites. Additionally, I also post comments left by readers. (As long as they aren't threatening or advertising their own shows.) I think this helps to open up communication and further dialogue.
